Over the course of a single year—from January 21, 2017 to January 21, 2018—Anthony Hawley made one poem-drawing a day, every day, addressed to a single recipient: Donald. dear donald… collects all 365, each opening with the same epistolary refrain, “dear donald...,” as it tracks the abuse, misuse, and corruption of language through the first year of the Trump administration. Part linguistic outcry, part poetic exploration, the work takes the form of a tear-off calendar, giving the daily discipline of its making a physical, almost ritual presence on the page.

This edition also includes a second volume: a collection of “spells” written and composed in response to Hawley’s drawings by an assembled group of artists, writers, composers, and musicians, including Angélica Negrón, Laura Sims, Missy Mazzoli, Gabriela Lena Frank, Krista Caballero, and Xinan Helen Ran, among others.

A number of the original drawings were first published in Hyperallergic, accompanied by a series of essays.
